Raffles Rugby Union was set up in 2010 by a group of Raffles Rugby Alumni eager to preserve and enhance the legacy and traditions of Rugby excellence in Raffles Institution. Led by Rajoo Armudalingam who served as the first President of Raffles Rugby Union, several initiatives were enacted to strengthen RI’s rugby programme. One of these initiatives included funding the provision of a Mental Skills Coach and Specialist Skills Coaches to supplement the school coaches’ work with the school ruggers. Subsequent Presidents and EXCO members of RRU continued to work closely with RI and parents of the school ruggers, leading up to the point in 2020 when RRU undertook its most elaborate plan to date in support of RI Rugby’s development; the setting up and operationalization of Gryphons Rugby Academy.
Beyond supporting the current and future school boy ruggers, RRU’s other focus lies in creating and sustaining a Raffles Rugby ecosystem where alumni ruggers can continue to be engaged and rallied. Besides hosting perennial events such as the Jim Weir Cup matches or Alumni Touch Tournaments, RRU looks to expand its outreach efforts in organizing and facilitating more Raffles Rugby social events. Besides rallying alumni ruggers of all vintages to get together either on or off the field, RRU also hopes to steer greater engagement between the alumni ruggers with the current school boys in meaningful ways, thus leading to strengthened Past to Present connections.
